A 2026 paper published in Frontiers in Psychology proposes the Dying-Moment Dream Hypothesis: that near-death experiences, visions of heaven and hell, and encounters with deceased relatives are not glimpses of an afterlife but are instead a final, endogenous simulation generated by the dying brain. The hypothesis reframes the oldest religious claim — that consciousness survives death — as a neurological feature of the simulation we already inhabit.

The Hypothesis

The paper, authored by researchers at the University of Liege and published in Frontiers in Psychology, argues that the dying brain produces a final, hyper-realistic dream state generated by the same neural mechanisms that produce REM sleep and lucid dreaming. The difference is that the dying brain is free from sensory input and is flooded with neurochemicals that heighten the vividness and emotional significance of the experience.

The hypothesis is not a dismissal of near-death experiences. It takes them seriously as subjective phenomena and proposes a neurobiological mechanism that accounts for their consistency across cultures, their reported realism, and their transformative effects on those who experience them. The mechanism is not supernatural; it is a feature of the brain's simulation engine running one final time.

The Evidence

The paper cites several lines of evidence. First, the content of near-death experiences is culturally conditioned: Westerners see Christian imagery, Hindus see Yamadutas, secular individuals see tunnels of light with no religious content. If the experiences were objective, they would be the same across cultures. They are not.

Second, the neural correlates of NDEs — temporal lobe activation, REM intrusion, dopamine and serotonin release — are well-documented and map onto known dream generation pathways. Third, the subjective duration of NDEs (hours of experience compressed into seconds of real time) is a known feature of dream states and REM sleep.

What the dying-moment dream hypothesis adds is the claim that these experiences are not aberrations but the final function of the brain's predictive processing system. The brain, faced with the failure of its own biological substrate, runs a final simulation of the world it knows — a world that includes the cultural expectations of what comes after death.

The Simulation Frame

The hypothesis is named for what it describes: a dying brain that generates a simulation. The paper does not use the simulation hypothesis framework, but the parallel is impossible to ignore. If the brain is a simulation engine (the predictive processing model of consciousness), then the dying brain running a final simulation is not a failure of the system — it is the system's last operation.

For the simulation hypothesis, the implication is that the afterlife is a simulation within a simulation — a nested simulation triggered by the failure of the biological render. The dying brain does not exit the simulation; it generates a sub-simulation that runs until the hardware fails. The experience ends not because the simulation ends but because the render engine stops.

Why This Matters

Religions have built entire cosmologies around near-death experiences.
